Na početku naše priče strašna obiteljska tragedija šesnaestogodišnjeg Jacoba odvede na daleki otok u blizini Walesa, gdje otkrije ruševne ostatke doma gospođice Peregrine za čudnovatu djecu. Dok istražuje napuštene sobe i hodnike u razrušenoj kući, postaje mu jasno da djeca nisu bila samo čudnovata: možda su bila i opasna. Koliko se god to činilo nemogućim, možda su nekako još uvijek živa.
