Ova knjiga nije vodič kroz život i djelo Umberta Eca, ni pregled njegovih najznačajnijih priloga semiotici, medievistici, naratologiji ili kojemu drugom području "teorije" koje se obično nabraja uz njegovo ime; nije čak ni obavijesni priručnik s uputama za čitanje njegovih romana, niti pokušava ocrtati razmjere ili razloge prijevodnog, nakladničkog, kritičkog i medijskog odjeka u svijetu, u Hrvatskoj i na ostalim rubovima anglo-američkoga kulturnog (dakle ekonomskog) carstva.
Naslov parafrazira duhoviti naslov Ecove studije o pragmatici teksta. Sintagma "theoria in fabula' mogla bi, s jedne strane, sažeti značajke pripovjednoga podžanra koji je, doduše, postojao i mnogo prije "Imena ruže" - od Dantea do proze 20. stoljeća (Joyce, Woolf, Borges, Musil, Cortazar, Robbe-Grillet, Sarraute, Butor, Calvino itd.) kakvu Ravmond Federman naziva "nadfikcijom" ili "kritifikcijom" - ali se nakon Ecova prvijenca upravo razbuktao u romanima pisaca, književnih kritičara i teoretičara u romanima koji su "teorijske ratove" nastavili voditi drugim, ne uvijek tako diplomatskim pripovjednim sredstvima...
