‘United States of Islam’ continues to excavate gems from Bryn Jones’ run of albums with Aussie label. Extreme for a first presentation on vinyl. Landing in the wake of an ‘Intifaxa’ (1990) reissue, this one comes from 1991 and follows a compelling thru line of rhythm and sound wrapped up with Muslimgauze’s signature, hands-on-mixing-desk tekkerz. It’s arguably a definitive part of the project that spanned nearly two decades, with all the hallmarks of his sound rendered especially spectral and utterly captivating in the momentum between his rolling, hand-played Arabic dub percussion and glowering drones in the bookending title track parts, with outstanding examples of the late, great man at work in the limber pulse and ricocheting percussion of ‘xiao’; a mighty prototype of Shackleton’s sinuous rolige in his dedication to the Uyghurs, ‘Muslims of China’; and use of lustrous, just intoned raga drone and tumbling drums on both counts of ‘Red Crescent’.
