Ever since the first Neandertal fossils were discovered there in the mid-1970s, Vindija cave has played a critical role in scientific understanding of late Neandertals and their role in early modern human origins in Europe.  Although interpretations have changed somewhat over the years, the Vindija Neandertals exhibit a morphological pattern that approaches early modern people much more closely than most other Neandertals.  In addition, the paleolithic archaeological evidence shows a pattern of change over time in the Mousterian industries at the site and the distinct possibility of cultural interaction between late Neandertals and early modern Europeans.  Finally, the rich faunal record provides important insights into Neandertal behavior and the ecology of this region during Middle and early Upper Paleolithic times.
